Case 1 – Repeated miscarriages
Mary, 39 years old: Mary had suffered 3 miscarriages in last year. She had a son of 24 months after a difficult birth which resulted in an emergency caesarean.  When she came to see Fiona she had her last miscarriage 3 weeks before. The miscarriages occurred twice at 6 weeks and once at 11 weeks.  She was diagnosed with depression after the 2nd miscarriage. She was often light headed and tired.  Because she always experienced strong ovulation pain and had regular periods we focussed on using acupuncture to boost her energy and dealing with grief from the miscarriages. After Mary’s 3rd treatment Fiona recommended herbs and Flurodix (an herbal blood/iron tonic) and Mary reported feeing ’stronger’ when taking these.  After 4 months Mary became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter by caesarean in Aug ‘04.

Case 2 – Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs with IVF Treatment
Emma, 31 years old: Emma had been trying to conceive for 18 months. Tests diagnosed ovarian cysts and endometriosis blocking her fallopian tubes. She had been advised that IVF was her only fertility treatment option. She started acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine March 2003 and then had IVF in July 2003, with acupuncture used as a support treatment. The treatment was successful at first attempt and had baby girl born April 2004. She is planning to have IVF spring 2006 – again using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for a few months prior to this.
